LT vs HT Cables: The Difference

The difference between low-tension (LT) and high-tension (HT) cables and where each is used.

LT (low-tension) and HT (high-tension) refer to the voltage level a cable is built for. LT cables are used for low-voltage power and control distribution; HT cables are used for higher-voltage systems and have additional layers, such as conductor and insulation screens, to manage the higher electrical stress.

Choosing

The right cable depends on the system voltage, current, installation conditions and the applicable standards for your project. Exact selection is confirmed per requirement.

What sets the choice

The choice is set by the system voltage, not by preference: LT cables serve circuits up to 1.1 kV, and HT cables serve the 11 kV and 33 kV distribution levels. Within each, the conductor size depends on the current and the permitted voltage drop, and the installation method, whether tray, duct or direct burial, affects both the cable type and how much current it can carry.
