Electrical Earthing Basics

What electrical earthing is, why it matters for safety, and what an earthing system involves.

Earthing provides a safe, low-resistance path for fault current to flow to ground. It protects people from electric shock and protects equipment by allowing protective devices to operate correctly when a fault occurs.

What a system involves

An earthing system typically includes earth electrodes, earth pits, earthing conductors and the bonding of equipment to the earth network. Earth resistance is tested to confirm the system performs as intended.

What good earthing depends on

Earth resistance depends heavily on the soil, so the same design performs differently on different sites. Measured resistance, not the design drawing, tells you whether an earthing system works, and it can change with the seasons as the soil dries or becomes wet. That is why earthing is tested after installation and rechecked periodically.
